„Dieses Jahr ist alles anders. Keine Eröffnung im gewohnten Rahmen, der Ausstellungsrundgang nicht am ersten Wochenende, dafür ein einwöchiges ‚24/7-Marathon-Camp‘ mit Programm rund um die Uhr, eine Überforderung gleich zu Beginn. Dass dieser steirische herbst ein deutlich anderer wird, ist eine Folge der rasanten weltweiten Veränderungen. Der Revolutionen in vielen arabischen Ländern, der Occupy-Bewegungen, der massiven Umbrüche und finanziellen Katastrophen in Europa, die zusammen auch die Rolle der Kunst infrage Stelen. In den vielen Gesprächen bei unseren Recherchen an Orten, in denen Gesellschaft in Bewegung geraten ist, zeigte sich schnell, dass Künstler überall und von Anfang an maßgeblich beteiligt waren. Aber es zeigte sich auch, dass die Frage, welche Rolle Kunst selbst dabei spielt, weitaus schwieriger ist. Ob es eine Kunst geben kann und soll, die nicht nur beobachtet, kommentiert und dokumentiert, sondern die sich ganz konkret engagiert.“

Im Jahr 2012 sei alles anders, begann Veronica Kaup-Haslers Vorwort zum Programmheft. Unter dem von Walter Benjamin inspirierten Titel Truth is concrete (Idee und Konzept: Florian Malzacher), der auch Leitmotiv des Festivals war, reagierte der steirische herbst auf die rasanten Veränderungen, Krisen und Umbrüche weltweit, die Bewegungen wie den Arabischen Frühling oder Occupy hervorgebracht hatten, sowie auf den globalen Aufstieg der populistischen Rechten, Umweltkatastrophen und finanzielle Kahlschläge mit einem „24/7-Marathon-Camp“.

Als Antwort auf die Aussage des Rechtspopulisten Geert Wilders, dass Kunst „ein linkes Hobby“ sei, analysierten über 200 Teilnehmer:innen aus Kunst, Wissenschaft, Theorie und Aktivismus – darunter der kolumbianische Philosoph und Politiker Antanas Mockus, die Theoretikerin Chantal Mouffe oder die radikale russische Künstlergruppe Woina – über eine Woche 24 Stunden täglich künstlerische Strategien in der Politik und politische Strategien in der Kunst. Das Camp am Opernring bestand aus unterschiedlichen, von raumlaborberlin gestalteten Modulen: Bar, Wohnzimmer, Black Cube und White Box, Videoarchiv, Bibliothek, Radio, Frisiersalon, Küche, Garten und Ruheräume.

Im Camp fand auch die herbst-Ausstellung Adaption (kuratiert von Zbyněk Baladrán und Vit Havránek) statt. Ein Stipendienprogramm ermöglichte zudem hundert jungen Studierenden, Künstler:innen und Aktivist:innen, in Workshops aktiv an diesem „Lebensraum auf Zeit“ teilzunehmen. Zu der im Rahmen des steirischen herbst einzigartigen Veranstaltung erschien ein eigenes Programmheft sowie 2014 die Publikation Truth Is Concrete. A Handbook for Artistic Strategies in Real Politics.

Weitere Kernprogrammpunkte waren die Kampagne und Benefiz-Gala Rebranding European Muslims der israelischen Performance- und Recherchegruppe Public Movement sowie die Lecture Performance 33 rounds and few seconds von Rabih Mroué und Lina Saneh, die fiktive Gerichtsverhandlung 1 hour 18 minutes des Moskauer Dokumentartheaters Teatr.doc, Untitled Feminist Show der US-amerikanischen Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company und The Insurrected Bodyvon La Pocha Nostra.
