Series: musikprotokoll
1968– (part of steirischer herbst from the beginning)
musikprotokoll of the Austrian broadcaster ORF has accompanied steirischer herbst for more than half a century. A festival within a festival, it is dedicated to experimental contemporary music and regards itself as a sort of laboratory. For many years, musikprotokoll was the festival’s central music event, and it is the longest-running series organized by a partner institution. Through the years it brought a diverse audience to steirischer herbst, and it received both national and international acclaim in the press.
The series was initiated in 1968 by the author and cultural manager Emil Breisach and Peter Vujica, who was subsequently an artistic director of the festival. As president of the Forum Stadtpark, Breisach had previously established a department for Neue Musik that focused on processing prewar modernism. He transferred this emphasis to musikprotokoll, which henceforth provided a stage for the Austrian premieres of composers of the Second Viennese School, including Ernst Krenek, Arnold Schönberg, and Alban Berg. While a work such as Berg’s Lulu had already been performed in Germany in the early 1950s, it was not presented in Austria until the 1981 edition of musikprotokoll.
In contrast to the other series, musikprotokoll always developed independently of steirischer herbst. A new era began in the 1980s when several young composers entered the scene, and, after the series was taken over by Christian Scheib in 1995, musikprotokoll left its traditional venues.
The close link between musikprotokoll and steirischer herbst is apparent in the figures of Peter Vujica and Peter Oswald. Both headed musikprotokoll prior to their tenures as artistic directors, and one focus of both of their directorships was contemporary music.
musikprotokoll is a coproduction of Ö1 and ORF Styria in cooperation with steirischer herbst. It has been directed since 2013 by Elke Tschaikner - the curators are Elke Tschaikner, Susanna Niedermayr, Christian Scheib, and Fränk Zimmer.
