Series

steirischer herbst was not always the conceptually focused festival it is today. Until the early 1980s, the name steirischer herbst served as an umbrella term for event series organized by various institutions in the city that made up the festival’s core program. These series were divided according to “genres” or art forms—music, literature, visual arts, photography, architecture, discourse—and formed the basis for the festival’s current interdisciplinary character. They can thus be understood as individual curatorial concepts of steirischer herbst that together constituted the festival. Moreover, they show the close network of cultural agents and institutions that shaped both the festival and the city’s cultural landscape for many years.
