Contemporary dance was first given a program of its own at steirischer herbst with New Dance ’76. It began with performances in public locations by the Scapino Ballet from Rotterdam, followed by the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. The premieres of the ensembles of Laura Dean and Trisha Brown in particular attracted international attention. The soloists included William Dunas, Douglas Dunn, Annabelle Gamson, and Klaus Rinke, who was also represented with an exhibition of his photographs.
The Jazz Live-Festival was also added to the main program in 1976, with five groups from the United States and England: the Trio, the Sunrise Orchestra, the Frank Wright Quartet, the Anthony Braxton Group, and the McCoy Tyner Sextet. musikprotokoll presented the forgotten late romanticist Viennese composer Franz Schreker, the just twenty-five-year-old Turin-based composer Lorenzo Ferrero (with a commissioned composition for a large oratorio), and Gösta Neuwirth, who was influenced by the Second Viennese School. The Internationale Malerwochen (International Painting Weeks) celebrated its tenth anniversary with a large retrospective at the Künstlerhaus, and the seventeenth Steirische Akademie (Syrian Academy) took place under the title Fragezeichen Mensch—Steuerung unserer Existenz (Humankind: That Unknown Entity, Control System of Our Existence).
The structural reform of the festival in 1976, which was heralded by a scaled-down Program Directorate in 1974, also involved changes in personnel: the state cultural advisor Kurt Jungwirth replaced the founder and first president Hanns Koren as head of the Presidium.
