An Elegy to the Medium of Film

The medium of film shapes our way of thinking, feeling and acting more strongly than we would suppose. “An Elegy to the Medium of Film” is based on the assumption that we have internalised film experiences to such an extent that even the smallest stimuli are enough to evoke them. Lundahl & Seitl penetrate the depths of our consciousness, taking us into a darkened space where the interplay of film projections, audio material and choreographed touch stirs up both sediments and sentiments of our cinematic memory.

Visitors are first presented with familiar cinematic devices, until the camera seems to take on a consciousness of its own and the visitor is invited to move beyond the frame of the screen and physically enter scenes they remember from cinematic history. The visitor is then set adrift in the history of film, floating between epic scenes, sounds and locations.

Lundahl & Seitl’s practice is partly situated in visual art, but they also integrate the notion of performance into their sculptural works. In this way they produce a total work of art that is shown at exactly the moment of its creation – as an elegy not only to endangered art forms, but also to the architectural shells in which they are presented. In their internationally acclaimed work “Symphony of a Missing Room”, which was given the Montblanc Young Directors Award at the Salzburger Festspiele in 2011, the duo focused on the museum. “An Elegy to the Medium of Film”, on the other hand, highlights a potential future of film and cinema by inspiring visitors to investigate in depth the cinematic medium and its interface with our world.
