Every age coins buzzwords to describe its state. Since economic liberalism has been rife, eating its way into all areas of life, interweaving with them and shaping them, the term ”coldness” has been on everyone’s lips. It is a word of exhortation that seems to focus the result of concentrating solely on such categories as utility, efficiency and usability: the emergence of dog-eat-dog societies, social cuts, indifference, spiritual impoverishment, and coldness of heart. In a word, ”coldness” as a metaphor of the ”temperature” of human relations that is greatly reduced as compared to normal conditions.
Literature, indeed art as a whole, counters this development in its own way: in its best, most interesting manifestations, it does not lament or moralise, but rather exorcises the devil with Beelzebub. The coldness of the world is banished by means of strategies of aesthetic sobering, cynical doubling of indifference, cold laconism: ”I shall silence you and erect a kingdom of silence, freeze your eyes, freeze your ears, freeze your genitals, I will tear love out of you by its roots.” (Konrad Bayer, ”herostrat”)
Coldness brings together an international field of participants with the aim of presenting the explosive nature and range of the subject.
