Inspired by ritual dances Ingri Fiksdal and Jonas Corell Petersen search for new rituals with their high-calibre company – in a rhythmic narrative of choreography, live music and costume.

How do rituals affect the state and vice versa? Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal and Danish director Jonas Corell Petersen dream up an atmospherically dense answer to this question. In “State”, a small, new society develops and searches for new mythologies and rituals, dances and costumes, yet remains mindful of the old, lost cultures.

Ingri Fiksdal often deals with themes of perception and affect in her work. Her latest production “State”, set to premiere at steirischer herbst, brings together five dancers in a choreography at the interface between concert and performance. Four new instruments, specially developed for the score composed by noise musician Lasse Marhaug, create a unique sound. The complex costumes created by internationally acclaimed Danish fashion designer Henrik Vibskov fill the entire space, becoming the stage set at the same time.

Always close to the audience, overlying rhythmic patterns of music and dance give rise to speculation on what a contemporary ritual dance could be, now hopeful, now frightening, but in any case deeply affecting.
