At this year’s Grundrechtstag, the Austrian Judges Association’s expert group on fundamental rights and interdisciplinary exchange focuses on the fundamental rights to freedom of expression and information, as well as press freedom in a sociopolitical context.
The event examines the phenomenon of social media as well as the changes in how we communicate and how news is disseminated, consumed, and evaluated. Targeted information control, for example to influence elections, votes, or even court hearings, is also addressed, along with the democratizing effects of low-threshold and decentralized information dissemination. Finally, communication in times of crisis, dealing with “fake news,” and the regulation of digital communication on the national and EU level are discussed.
