In Tino Sehgal’s new work, two parks in Graz become places of playful encounter.

Tino Sehgal describes his works as situations that are neither performances nor installations. Numerous “interpreters” infiltrate and interact with an audience, blurring the border between art and life, or public and private. Each of his works unfolds as a unique social event on location. In this way, Sehgal questions the economy of attention behind works of art and how they are defined by their institutional setting, especially when they become increasingly immaterial.

In more recent works, Sehgal has been venturing out of art institutions and into public space. For steirischer herbst, he and his collaborators take over two Graz parks from sunrise till sunset during the first four days of the festival. Forty unmarked dancers/actors mingle with park visitors. Like a swarm or flock, the participants gather and disperse. The artist prefers his work not to be documented, which is one more reason to come in person.
