Transborders is an artistic and documentary retrospective look at the transdisciplinary, four-day festival of the arts that took place in late August under the motto “Fluxus on the River” along the Austrian border to Slovenia and up into the three-country border between Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary. The exhibition includes documentation as well as adaptations and artifacts of the realized works of art. An additional supplementary aspect of the Transborders festival is being presented at Pavelhaus, which shows both documentation and new content. The festival format included permanent installations, interventions, happenings, and performances that took place in public space within a seventy-two-hour period in different locations along the Mur and Kutschenitza rivers. One hundred years after the delineation of Austria’s new borders, as determined by the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1919, the artists of Transborders were interested in the real situation along national and cultural borders and in people’s minds. The topic of language played a particularly important role in the project, since language is consistently associated with forms of discrimination in this border region.
