Fifty years back, there was a great stir when “trigon 67” totally reinterpreted the exhibition format, presenting genre-spanning configurations of space as artistic works. Contemporary artists are now set to respond to this historic project at the original location.

The exhibition entitled “ambiente / environment” was the first themed edition of the three-nation biennial founded in Graz in 1963 that showcased contemporary art from Austria, Italy and the former Yugoslavia.

The exponents in this current update come from the same area. Fifteen artists make reference to the works of 1967 by means of site-specific installations and space-embracing treatments of sculpture, painting and media. Visitors encounter the first spectacular works in the field outside the Künstlerhaus, where Eilfried Huth constructs an interpretation of the futuristic pavilion of transparent plastic that he had designed together with Günther Domenig as the entrance building for “trigon 67”. A new maze of paths that guides visitors to the various artworks around a spacious site in and around the Künstlerhaus is also being created. An extensive slide and film show with original footage and a symposium in Graz, Zagreb and Trieste complete the historical reference.

“trigon 67/17” is a retrospective and an update in equal measure, and thus also deals with the principle of reenactment: how can historical positions be reinterpreted in the present and what added value does this bring? The basic idea, however, is retained: the aim is to focus on the artistic handling of space and enable the audience to physically experience this aspect.
