Literaturhaus Graz bookends this year’s Jelinek theme: a matinée on the first weekend of the festival will get you in the mood for the magnum opus, while a symposium following the festival provides fresh fodder for anyone who hasn’t gone far enough with Jelinek yet.

To put it Styrian: Elfriede Jelinek’s novel “Die Kinder der Toten” from 1995 is a Grimming of German-language literature. A mighty massif standing out in the open countryside.

With a symposium at the end of October, Literaturhaus Graz continues the collective ascent of this literary massif within the city limits. Lectures add further depth to the themes of the novel and follow on the trail of its reception, while readings and performances test new forms of interpretation. Two films provide the visuals: in the documentary “Ramsau am Dachstein”, 1976, Jelinek plumbs the depths of Heimat in an astonishing TV format. The B movie “Carnival of Souls”, 1962, offers undead as a source of inspiration for writing.

An open workshop on the evenings of the symposium provides the tools for this in-depth examination of the work: references and links in the novel, sources and facts about its creation, allusions and quotations, explorations of its plotlines, guides to reading, roundabout and devious paths, (occasional) falls.

The matinée preluding the festival gives first insights into the novel and a taste of the venture of creating a film version.
