Opening steirischer herbst, the acclaimed choreographer Mette Ingvartsen experiments with sensual, erotic and social body languages. She extends pleasurable and joyful situations until they culminate in a celebration with all participants. A choreography that both captivates and stimulates.

We are constantly surrounded by images of sexual bodies – on posters and in magazines, on television and on the internet. The intimate and the erogenous influence the way we live, what we buy and how we move. With her performance “to come (extended)” the Danish choreographer Mette Ingvartsen investigates this involuntary interweaving of the public and private sphere. She shrouds her fifteen dancers in blue full-body suits, contrasting the deluge of images of naked skin and explicit eroticism with an abstract image.

In various speeds and rhythms, these sensual bodies test a seemingly endless series of orgiastic formations. The figural orgy turns into a singing choir, followed by an energetic social dance where the dancers shed their suits to perform some jaunty swing steps. The enjoyment of abstract colours and shapes mix with a sensation of rhythmic pulsing, while social structures come undone.

After “69 Positions” and – at steirischer herbst 2015 – “7 Pleasures”, Mette Ingvartsen now returns to an early examination of sexuality. “to come (extended)” is a new version of a production from 2005, with ten additional performers. In this new version, Ingvartsen confronts herself and her audience with the light-hearted view of sexualised forms of representation, she took at the beginning of her international career.

Together with her group, she stages extended states of pleasures in which excitement is both excessively slowed down and energetically sped up, and thus deliberately delays the collective climax again and again. That’s why the evening isn’t over when the applause begins: instead, it transitions seamlessly into a sensual celebration with the audience that culminates in a live concert of Hamburg’s electro brass duo Die Vögel. Dance, eat and celebrate together with us!
