Verlorene Zeit, wiedergefundene Zeit

All music is, once it has sounded, a thing of the past – a past that cannot turn into presence or future unless it is remembered. As to this achievement and the procedures that bring it about, music, the temporal art par excellence, is at home in varied grades. They reach from precise repetition down to subcutaneous traces of the past that hardly cross the threshold of consciousness and will receive full awareness only via the analytic insight of those studying the score.

What we call memory is not something simple and homogeneous. In some cases we use the word for deliberate disposition over past subject-matter. The mémoire volontaire has taken an inventory of her contents as collectors do with their items. What mémoire involontaire finds, by way of contrast, has defied all efforts to seize and reproduce it at will. We stumble upon it as it wells up in us. Philosophy and literature have explored such distinctions for at least a century – since Bergson and Proust. For reflection on music, understood both as text, i.e., composition, and as sound realized only as we play and listen, it is still in store to try out such notions. In the attempt to bring them to bear, we shall be bound to modify them.
