Festivalzentrum im Stadtpark

As nomadic as the festival is its centre, which travels to a new site every year, settling there for a certain time – this time in Forum Stadtpark, designed by the young Austrian architecture collective feld72, who have made a name for themselves above all with urban interventions.

Self-confident and, at the same time, economical with resources, this year the festival centre takes on the guise of a confidence trickster, wily and with a tendency towards delusions of grandeur. Everyday recyclable Euro pallets – a cheap, standardised mass product developed for smooth movement of goods – are masterfully stacked up to create an annexe, a new axis thrusting through the Forum and out into the park. The building material is hired; even though it imposes profoundly on the architecture, it is obvious that it will disappear again and return to the commodity cycle.

The open-air grandstand created in this way creates unsuspected possibilities and transforms the Forum into a backdrop behind and in which life takes its course: coffee-house, club, lounge, information desk and ticket office, academy, casino, stage, concert hall ... As part of the Sunday brunches, the notorious Theater im Bahnhof is occupying to the Styrian parliamentary elections, among other things with various phone talks with politicians. ”Living in the bar” is the title of a range of atmospheric Thursday-evening events. Artists from around the globe, theorists, journalists and audiences come together at the festival centre to talk, celebrate and drink – and if you are not here, maybe you will be on the vacant stage. As long as it is there.
