The relationship between viewer and art work has been the focal point of interest for Franz West since the seventies: his famous Adaptives – white, usually organic forms of paper-mâché, plaster or metal that were made available for exhibition visitors to use – have not only influenced artists and theorists from ”relational art” to the present day. He has long ranked among the most important artists of our time; he transfered the categories of virtuosity into contexts of everyday life.

The comprehensive retrospective – developed in close co-operation with the artist – brings together more than eighty works from all periods, demonstrating the complexity and originality of his works in different media and techniques. The show ranges from the first adaptives and collages from the seventies to the paper-mâché sculptures, furniture, spatial installations and picture walls from the eighties, to an outdoor sculpture that Franz West will exhibit next to the Kunsthaus.
