An explosion. Tremor, bang, smithereens. A catastrophe, a misfortune, no doubt.

The artists and architects Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius and Jan Liesegang from raumlaborberlin build their own explosion outside and into the festival centre – inspired by a sequence from Antonioni’s film classic “Zabriskie Point”. To them, explosion is above all a form. A structure that develops a fascinating power at the very moment of its dissipation. An event that destroys but also makes room for new and unexpected things. A landmark visible from far and wide: particularly at night when the splintery structure protrudes aglow from the Joanneum.

A walk-in form, the explosion takes you into the heart of the festival centre, the exhibition, the café. Inside is monochrome. With the aid of a few modifications, the Baroque interiors of the most senior and second-largest Austrian museum are opened up towards the city, furniture and windows cut out of former exhibition architecture. The building becomes a relief with different layers of time; immersed in a few hues on the ground floor that slowly give way to the nuances of a black-and-white film as you go up. We are accents of colour in sculptural spaces.
