Twins have a fascination of their own, a fascination of closeness, of similarity, the question as to the limits of individuality: look-alikes and yet unmistakable subjects. Since coming together six years ago, choreographers Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke have often worked with this metaphor of the closest of relationships, describing their artistic symbiosis as that of a non-biological twin: They have substituted the normative model of the heterosexual couple with the fiction of the artist twin.
In this collaboration, they have since not only developed a clear language of form, but also a very individual choreographic practice that allows them to translates topics and visual media into movement. Their performances integrate bodies as well as sound, space, art film and documentary material, revolving around biographical imprints, experience, loss and past.
In “reportable portraits” they focus their work explicitly on the twin metaphor and mutual portrayal: In the preliminary phase of the project, they separately develop one dance solo – their only exchange taking place in the form of a shared notebook, so that two different choreographies are based on shared notes. Then the two solos are superimposed.
The performance itself is created with the aid of this existing material: In a sound/stage room created by German composer Hubert Machnik and Belgian photographer and stage designer Hermann Sorgeloos, the five dancers explore forms and functions of the portrait and self-portrait, fictitious autobiographies, melancholy, myth, terror and gender difference.
