The German artist Ecke Bonk, who lived in Austria for several decades and who took part in two documentas (X and XI) and the Venice Biennial, Austrian pavilion (1999), has not only distinguished himself as a typographer but also as a multimedia artist.
In his work, based on a philosophy of typography that he himself refers to as typosophy, he has not only presented a systematic analysis of graphical decisions, machine signs and the associated processes of perception, optical illusions, etc., but has also increasingly placed them in a general context, thus exemplarily illustrating the evolution from picture to visual culture. He is a decision-making artist who has worked out the graphical and print-related conditions in the field of visual culture.
These investigations were favoured by his interests in natural science, to which he also owes his excellent reputation as the publisher of scientific writings in the Springer Verlag publishers in Vienna. His collaboration with such colleagues as Richard Hamilton and his works on Duchamp also testify to his internationally acknowledged expertise as an artist, curator and author.
This is the first major personal exhibition of Ecke Bonk.
