So-called populists across the world blame the neoliberal global market and international corporations for all catastrophes man-made and natural. They pitch an alternative dream of insulation from global supply chains, promising a return of stability, strong nation states, and insurance policies against the apocalypse. Yet these same secessionists often hoard their wealth offshore, practice intensified forms of capitalist exploitation, and have little chance of actually opting out of the world system. In his talk, Quinn Slobodian looks at those who claim to be disconnecting from neoliberalism, shows that their claims of exodus are illusions, and asks what other futures might be more desirable.
