The police procedural Tatort has been on German television since the 1970s, featuring hard-nosed cops solving crimes and intimidating perpetrators. Recently, even veteran franchises like Tatort have been facing drastic new conditions. The pandemic has forced many running productions into hiatus, while recent scrutiny on police procedure means that yesterday’s heroics could look like atrocities. Mark Waschke, star of Tatort’s Berlin series, talks about AI actors, avatar animation, police brutality and racism, G. W. F. Hegel, and what it’s like to be a TV cop on furlough. Recorded and set up by the artist Hito Steyerl.
