In the context of the opening of steirischer herbst ’92 American artist Jana Haimsohn presented America nowhere, a performance of more than one hour that took its title from the festival’s leitmotif and contrasted personal stories about loss and mourning with America’s collective memory. The artist worked with her body, her voice, and a drum to exteriorize her innermost emotional states. Haimsohn’s expressive performance impressed the steirischer herbst audience so much that they demanded an encore.

The artist lives and works in New York, where she develops literary and film projects and offers performance, dance, and improvisation workshops.
