Miyata Jiro
Performance
Hauptbahnhof and Hauptplatz
26.9.–27.9.1997

Miyata Jiro is one of the best-known works by Momoyo Torimitsu. With it, the artist took a critical as well as humorous look at the Japanese economic miracle of the 1960s. The performance showed a “corporate soldier” crawling through the business centers of the Global West. The hyperrealistic robot was accompanied by the artist dressed as a nurse.

The performance was shown in the late 1990s in New York, Amsterdam, and Rio de Janeiro, among other places, and was staged in Graz during “Zones of Disturbance” for steirischer herbst ’97.

Momoyo Torimitsu lives and works in New York.
