steirischer herbst ’86
Prelude

Director
Peter Vujica

Festival dates
20.9.–31.10.1986

Within the framework of a five-part poetry symposium organized by the Forum Stadtpark with the title Sprache der Liebe—Literatur als Erotik (The Language of Love—Literature as Eroticism), a series of opening readings took place at various locations in the trigon countries on September 19 and 20. Heinz Cibulka accordingly designed the opening at the Schauspielhaus as a Vorspiel (Prelude, or Foreplay), which took on the form of a “scenic round dance” consisting of visual, musical, verbal, and theatrical elements.

The Stadtmuseum, in cooperation with the Grazer Kunstverein, presented the exhibition Die Wahlverwandtschaften—Zitate (Elective Affinities—Quotes; conception and organization: Peter Pakesch) on the correspondence between literature and the fine arts, with a range of top-notch international artists. In it, one artist was paired with one writer, for instance, John Baldessari and Raymond Carver or Francesco Clemente and Allen Ginsberg (the only two women artists included were Jenny Holzer and Mariella Simoni). At the Galerie Hoschek, eleven Austrian artists presented painted works and drawings in an exhibition titled Liebeskunst—Kunstliebe (The Art of Love—The Love of Art).

Otto M. Zykan’s Auszählreim: Theater für ein Opernhaus (Counting Rhyme: Theater for an Opera House) was premiered at the Opernhaus, and the SKELET-Theater Graz presented an experimental examination of Heiner Müller’s Hamletmaschine (Hamlet Machine). Among the projects personally initiated by Peter Vujica was the series “Keine Gnade” (No Mercy) on Lendplatz, with groups like The Fall, Lesa McLaughlin and Dancers, GUM, Laibach, Family +5, and Live Skull as an avant-garde, performative antithesis to the more established, “serious” program of musikprotokoll.
