In the early 1980s, steirischer herbst opened its program to countries beyond the borders of Europe for the first time. Bringing in the Third World began with an Africa Academy, as a “corrective to the wretched egoism under which we Europeans suffocate.”1 One open house program featured the renowned South African pianist and composer Dollar Brand, alias Abdullah Ibrahim, at the Haus der Jugend with African Jazz. There was also a “Dritte Welt”-Abend (“Third World” Evening), with presentations about sub-Saharan Africa as well as music and dance by Steelband and the Aklowa group.

The eighth Grazer Filmtage presented Kino in Schwarzafrika—Schwarzafrika im Kino (Cinema in Sub-Saharan Africa—Sub-Saharan Africa in the Cinema). The series Österreichisches Theater mit Uraufführungen von österreichischen Autoren (Austrian Theater with Premieres by Austrian Authors) featured guest performances such as the Vienna Volkstheater’s production of Peter Turrini’s successful Christmas play Josef und Maria (Joseph and Mary).

The musical focus of steirischer herbst ’80 was a Personale (solo presentation) on works by Ernst Krenek. In the field of visual art, everything revolved around painting this year: Neue Malerei aus den Niederlanden (New Painting from the Netherlands) at the Neue Galerie, Neue Tendenzen der Malerei in Frankreich (New Tendencies in Painting in France) at the Künstlerhaus, Friedrich Bergler: Malerei (Friedrich Bergler: Painting) at the Joanneum-Eckhaus, the Werke der XV. Internationale Malerwochen (Works of the Fifteenth International Painting Weeks) at the Neue Galerie, and the Kunstpreis der Stadt Köflach (Art Prize of the City of Köflach) at the Volksheim in Köflach. Gerhard Rühm presented Bildnerische Arbeiten aus 25 Jahren (Twenty-Five Years of Pictorial Works) at the Kulturhaus, and the Forum Stadtpark presented Europäische Fotografie: Teil 1; Steiermark (European Photography: Part 1; Styria).
