Image Wars
The Power of Images

Artists: Kader Attia, Cana Bilir-Meier, Melvin Moti, Rabih Mroué, Mario Pfeifer, Marlies Pöschl

Images have the power to pervasively influence our collective visual memory and how we view culture and contemporary events. They color our perception especially in connection with representations of violence or its reality. The exhibition presents international examples of video artworks that address the mechanisms of political conflicts between image reception and the culture of remembrance.

Gerlind Zeilner
Cowgirls

The artist explores the ambivalences within painting that lead to clichéd pictorial inventions dictated by a male-dominated art history. In scenes set in fictional Western saloons or real-life artist bars, she critically and humorously calls into question heroic-seeming gestures by means of special formal structures and color schemes. Cowgirls takes us on a whirlwind ride through contemporary painting.
